Note: These instructions comply with those formulated by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). For further details, authors should consult the following article: International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” New Engl J Med 1997, 336:309–315. The complete document appears at www.icmje.org.
Scope The Egyptian Journal of Histology (EJH) publishes original research papers on histology, cytology and related subjects. The journal provides a unique source of information about all aspects of the histological and microscopical structure of the cells and tissues, tissue culture and stem cell researches, genetic and immunohistochemical studies and cytological researches. Emphasis and preference are given to research that promotes health protection and management of patients. The journal also encourages authors from all countries to submit papers dealing with subjects within the scope of the journal. The ultimate responsibility for any decision lies with the Editor-in-Chief, to whom any appeals against rejection should be addressed.
Redundant or duplicate publication We ask you to confirm that your paper has not been published in its current form or a substantially similar form (in print or electronically, including on a web site), that it has not been accepted for publication elsewhere, and that it is not under consideration by another publication. The ICMJE has provided details of what is and what is not duplicate or redundant publication. If you are in doubt (particularly in the case of material that you have posted on a web site), we ask you to proceed with your submission but to include a copy of the relevant previously published work or work under consideration by other journals. In your covering letter to the editors, draw attention to any published work that concerns the same patients or subjects as the present paper.
Conflicts of interest EJH requires authors to state all possible conflicts of interest, including financial and other relationships on a separate line in the Acknowledgements section of the paper. If you are sure that there is no conflict of interest, please state so. The ICMJE provides further information on conflicts of interest. Remember that sources of funding should also be acknowledged in your paper on a separate line in the Acknowledgements section.
Permissions to reproduce previously published material EJH requires you to send us copies of permission to reproduce material (such as illustrations) from the copyright holder of the previously published material. Articles cannot be published without these permissions.
Patient consent forms The protection of a patient's right to privacy is essential. Please send copies of patients’ consent forms on which patients or other subjects of your experiments clearly grant permission for the publication of photographs or other material that might identify them. If the consent form for your research did not specifically include this, please obtain it or remove the identifying material. A statement to the effect that such consent had been obtained should be included in the ‘Methods’ section of your paper.
Ethics committee approval Submission of a manuscript to EJH implies that all authors have read and agreed to its content and that any experimental research that is reported in the manuscript has been performed with the approval of an appropriate ethics committee. Research carried out on humans must be in compliance with the Helsink Declaration. A statement to this effect must appear in the Methods section, including the name of the body which gave approval. Informed consent must also be documented. Similarly, for experiments involving animals, you must state the care of an animal and licensing guidelines under which the study was performed. If ethics clearance was not necessary, or if there was any deviation from these standard ethical requests, please state why it was not required. Please note that the editors may ask you to provide evidence of ethical approval. If you have approval from a National Drug Agency (or similar) please state this and provide details, this can be particularly useful when discussing the use of unlicensed drugs. Manuscripts may be rejected if the editorial office considers that the research has not been carried out within an ethical framework.
Authorship We ask that all authors sign the covering letter. We ask all authors to confirm that they have read and approved the paper. Second, we ask all authors to confirm that they have met the criteria for authorship as established by the ICMJE, believe that the paper represents honest work, and are able to verify the validity of the results reported.
All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship and all those who qualify should be listed. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content. One or more authors should take responsibility for the integrity of the work as a whole, from inception to published article. Authorship credit should be based only on 1) substantial contributions to conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; 3) final approval of the version to be published. Conditions 1, 2 and 3 must all be met. Acquisition of funding, the collection of data or general supervision of the research group, by themselves, do not justify authorship. All others who contributed to the work who are not authors should be named in the Acknowledgements section.
Types of papers:
Full-length research papers.
Short communications and technical notes providing a brief account of a certain piece of work, research plans or work in progress.
Review articles.
Case reports.
The announcement of forthcoming events (meetings, awards, etc).
Preparation of manuscript:
Papers will be published in English with a summary in Arabic.
Type or print out the manuscript on A4 paper with margin of at least 25 mm.
Type or print only on one side of the paper and use double spacing throughout.
Authors are requested to restrict the length of papers; repetition has to be avoided.
Tables and histograms have to be explanatory to statistical results without repetition.
Number the pages consecutively, beginning with the title page.
The article has to be divided into sections with the following headings:
The Title: Must be concise, but titles that are too short may, however, lack information, such as study design (which is particularly important). The title should be written in block letters. Short title in running head should be no more than 65 characters, including author names.
Authors names and institutional affiliations should be listed, including the name(s) of the department(s) and institution(s) to which the work should be attributed.
Abstract: Should be structured of 250–300 words and should contain a review of the size of the material, methods, new findings, and important conclusions. Headings are bold.
Keywords: Should not repeat the title of the manuscript. The most desirable is to use keywords from the MeSH catalog.
Introduction: Should be short, covering not more than one page. Give only strictly pertinent references and do not include data or conclusions from the work being reported.
Materials and Methods: Give details of ethics committee approval. Describe your selection of the experimental subjects (patients or laboratory animals including controls). Identify the age, sex and other important characteristics of the subjects. Identify the methods and procedures in sufficient details. Identify precisely all drugs and chemicals used, including generic name(s) and route(s) of administration.
Statistics: Describe statistical methods with enough detail to enable a knowledgeable reader to access to the original data to verify the reported results. Specify any computer program used.
Results: Do not repeat in the text all the data in illustrations or tables. Summarize only important observations.
Illustrations: Limit the illustrations to those which clarify and reinforce the text while avoiding illustrations that demonstrate the same features. A manuscript can be rejected on the basis of the poor quality of illustrations. Hardcopy Illustrations should be unmounted. Figure number author’s name and title of the paper should be marked by soft pencil on the back of every illustration. Legends for illustrations should be brief and specific and listed on a separate sheet.
For electronic illustrations, most file formats are accepted, but TIFF and EPS files, with fonts embedded, are preferred. If scanned, line art should be at a resolution of 800 dpi, and halftones and colour at 300 dpi. All colour values should be CMYK.
Since illustrations must usually be reduced in size, authors should ensure that numerical and alphabetical notations within illustrations are large enough to be easily legible after reduction.
Diagrams and sketches should be in a state suitable for direct production.
Create, Scan and Save your artwork and compare your final figure to the Digital Artwork Guideline Checklist (below).
Upload each figure to Editorial Manager in conjunction with your manuscript text and tables.
Digital Artwork Guideline Checklist Here are the basics to have in place before submitting your digital artwork:
Artwork should be saved as TIFF, EPS, or MS Office (DOC, PPT, XLS) files. High-resolution PDF files are also acceptable.
Crop out any white or black space surrounding the image.
Diagrams, drawings, graphs, and other line art must be a vector or saved at a resolution of at least 1200 dpi. If created in an MS Office program, send the native (DOC, PPT, XLS) file.
Photographs, radiographs and other halftone images must be saved at a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
Photographs and radiographs with text must be saved as postscript or at a resolution of at least 600 dpi.
Each figure must be saved and submitted as a separate file. Figures should not be embedded in the manuscript text file.
Tables: Should be numbered consecutively in order of appearance in the text. The table number should be followed by a brief informative descriptive title. Footnotes and explanations are to be typed under the table.
Discussion: It is useful to begin the discussion by a brief summary of the main findings, and compare and contrast the results with other relevant studies. Link the conclusion with the goals of the study.
Acknowledgments: Appears before references. Financial support or assistance from commercial sources should be acknowledged disclaimer and conflict of interests should also be included.
References: Should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals written in square located (separately commas no space). References to papers accepted but not yet published should be designated ‘‘in press’’.
References to periodicals: 1- authors’ name 2- title of paper 3- name of periodical (abbreviated according to Index Medicus), 4- year 5- volume 6- number of issue 7- first and last page e.g. Braekevelt CR, Smith SA, and Smith BJ: Fine structure of the retinal pigment epithelium of Oreochromis niloticus L. (Cichlidae Teleostie) in Anat. Rec. (1998) 252(3): 444-452.
References to books: 1- authors 2- year 3- the title of the article, and or book (editor’s name if any), page or pages 4- edition 5- publisher’s name 6- the place of publication e.g. Young B and Heath JW: Wheater’s Functional Histology. 4th ed., Churchill Livingstone.
