Abstract

Abstract
Background: Energy drinks (ED) are an attractive trend in a wide consumer base, especially students, and athletes. However, evidence states a significant number of morbidity and mortality in consumers, even among young or healthy persons. As oxidative stress is the principal factor in ED myocardial toxicity, current research is created to evaluate the antioxidant potential and the possible cardioprotective role of Sesame Oil (SO) against ED myocardial toxicity. Aim: This research aims to display the myocardial toxicity accompanied by ED consumption. It suggests using available, affordable, natural supplements such as SO to improve this toxicity. Material and methods: Forty male rats were divided into 4 groups; the Control group received distilled water. SO, group: received SO at a dose of (0.4 ml/100 g/day for 30 days). ED group: received (Red Bull) energy drink orally at a dose of (7.5 mL/100g/day for 30 days). ED+SO group: received ED and SO as the previously mentioned doses. Results: Administration of ED resulted histologically in myofiber disarrangement, hypertrophy, interstitial fibrosis, and vascular thrombosis. The biochemical assay presented induction of malondialdehyde (MDA) signifying lipid peroxidation, increase in nitric oxide (NO), decrease in glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels denoting oxidative effect of ED. Immunohistochemical results revealed increased caspase-3 expression in ED hearts compared with controls. Intriguingly, consequent administration of SO with ED revealed a protection and significant reduction in ED myocardial toxicity. Conclusion: These findings implied that Sesame Oil effectively ameliorates ED toxicity by reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory effects in the myocardium.
