Abstract
Background: Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have gained considerable attention due to their widespread and extensive use in biomedical and cosmetic applications. However, there is an ongoing debate about their benefits and potential toxic effects on biological systems. Selenium is a vital Component that plays a major role in preserving human health.
Aim: The work aimed to examine the influence of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the structures of testis of adult male albino rats and to assess the effect of Selenium.
Materials and methods: Forty- eight rats were utilized in this work. Rats were classified into four groups. Control group (I): included 12 rats which received 0.5ml/100 mg of distilled water by orogastric gavage for 28 days. Selenium group (II): included 12 rats that received 0.5 mg/Kg/day of Selenium orally by orogastric gavage for 28 days. Group (III): contained 12 rats that given 100 mg/ kg/ day of ZnO NPs orally by orogastric gavage for 28 days. Group (IV): included 12 rats that concomitantly received both Selenium and ZnO NPs at the same dosage, route and duration as in group II & group III respectively. Testicular specimens were subjected to histological examinations. Germinal epithelium thickness and seminiferous tubule diameter measurements were gathered and subjected to statistical analysis.
Results: In the current study, sections in group III showed a disturbance in the microscopic structure of the testis, but the architecture of the testis in group IV was nearly preserved. The statistical study documented these results.
Conclusion: A correlation was observed between Selenium and the reduction of harmful effects caused by zinc oxide nanoparticles in adult male albino rats testes. Selenium played a protective role in preserving the testis.
