Comparative morphological and histological study of liver in two Iraqi mammals (Felis catus) and (Sciurus anomalus)

Abstract

This current work was amid to compared the liver morohological description and histological structure in the domestic cat (F. catus) and Caucasian squirrel (S. anomalus), which differ in their feeding pattern. According to the results, that the liver in F. catus is located on the upper right side of the abdominal cavity .the liver which dark reddish brown with 6 distinct lobes. This is similar to that in the Caucasian squirrel, except that the liver is light reddish brown in color and contains 5 lobes, in addition a slight differences were also found in the shape of the lobes. Histologically, the liver in both studied animals which a thin connective tissue capsule and contains on scattered nuclei of smooth fiber cells. From this capsule, septa are extended into the visceral tissue of the liver, dividing it into several overlapping and unclear lobules, since these septa are incomplete around the lobules. The internal tissue of the liver consists of hepatocytes in the form of cords located around the central vein, in the core of lobule and in a radial manner. These cells are polygonal in shape and have a single spherical, large and central nucleus or binucleated. The cords are branch out and create spaces between them, forming blood sinuses that contain red blood cells; these cords were noticed to be more numerous in the domestic cat than in Caucasian squirrel. The sinusoids are lined with endothelial cells containing an elongated spindle-shaped nucleus. Furthermore, another type of cell was also detected in the sinusoidal space called phagocytic kupffer cells, which have a round nucleus and smaller in size than the nucleus of hepatocytes and abundant pale cytoplasm.
